EARTH DAY 2010
ERC PRESENTS:
San Jose State University annually celebrates Earth Day—the yearly, international event held on April 22 ever since its establishment in 1970. Starting with 20 million international participants its first year, the event now involves over half a billion people world wide.
Earth Day 2010 will be the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
Initiated by Senator Gaylord Nelson, a San Jose State University Alumni and former Wisconsin Senator, Earth Day boosted international environmental issues to the political forefront. Nelson’s creation of Earth Day represents an incredible milestone for environmentalism, including the passing of the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Protection Act, and the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The theme of Earth Day this year is Sustainable Agriculture. After all, the international community has become dependent on monoculture and genetically modified organisms to provide food for our ever expanding population. Environmentalists find it important to question the productivity of food systems and create efficient, sustainable solutions to their problems. Agriculture also uses an enormous amount of water. In California, moving water around the state with colossal pumps requires a substantial amount of energy. Issues like water require attention because of their ever growing impact on the quality of life. As a result, SJSU’s Earth Day 2010 focuses on sustainable agriculture methods, organic and local foods, community gardening, and alternative energy.
This year’s Earth Day event runs from 10 am to 2 pm on Thursday, April 22, 2010. Vendors, organizations, groups and activities that engage attendees with environmental issues will be featured at the 7th and 9th Street plazas, including The SJSU Environmental Club, Sierra Club, Veggielution, the City of San Jose, Valley Transportation Authority, Federal Environmental Protection Agency, Our City Forest, the California Faculty Association, and many more.
Bring your friends, family, and colleagues and for a free learning experience about important sustainable and environmental activities happening here in the Bay Area.
