What is the ERC?

We are a student-run organization, connected to the Department of Environmental Studies, funded by the Associated Students and Transportation Solutions. The Environmental Resource Center was established in 1967 and soon became the student research and activist wing of the Environmental Studies Department. Since the early 1970s, the ERC has served SJSU with an annual Earth Day celebration, an environmental library, and other projects that promote sustainable living. Students in the ERC started the campus recycling program and an alternative commute planning program that ultimately became Transportation Solutions, a permanent department of Associated Students.

To serve the student body and our supporting organizations, we undertake a range of projects each year. The projects are linked to EnvS 181, a course that students take for credit. The ERC is run by student directors and supervised by a faculty advisor. In addition to organizing the campus Earth Day event, currently, the ERC is creating a library of local Environmental Impact Reports, maintaining an internship and job database, and working to bring organic food to our campus dining facilities.

Course Objectives

You will learn and practice leadership and communication skills through environmentally- themed projects on campus and in the local community. This course requires a high level of active participation and independent work. <!--[endif]-->

Grading

Your grade will be based on the following:

Staffing the ERC office and completing assigned duties (75%)
Midterm and final evaluations (25%)

ERC office hours are spent in the ERC working on ERC related projects. The number of hours assigned to you depends on the number of units you signed up for. You will also be assigned some work to do at home, which does not count toward ERC office hours.

1 unit = 2 hours per week

2 units = 4 hours per week

3 units = 6 hours per week

It is essential that you are punctual in meeting your staffing hours; you will lose points if you are late or do not fulfill your weekly, 6-hour commitment to the ERC. If you will be late or cannot come in for your hours, you must inform the ERC Director. If your reasons are valid, you will be allowed to make up one week of office hours.

Your grade will be determined after the final evaluation. Your mid-term and final evaluations, contract, and general class performance will be considered. We are looking for honest self-evaluation, participation in all aspects of the class, positive progress in skills, and enthusiasm.

Course Tasks

Contract

You will maintain a contract sheet that lists each task assigned to you.

Evaluations

Midterm Evaluation – During weeks 7 and 8 (March 12 and March 19), each student will set up a time to meet privately with the Faculty Advisor and the Director. Together we will evaluate your assignments and you progress in the class.

Final Evaluation - At the end of the semester, you will turn in a 2 page evaluation of your involvement in the ERC. You will get a separate assignment sheet for this.
